As I was considering all the conventional logos I could use for this assignment, I had music on. None other than the band my mom listened to in her teenage years, which then became instilled in me as a child. STYX. Yes Styx. Anyways, it hadn’t occurred to me until now that musicians/artists brand themselves as well. In the Styx logo, one of the gestalt principles that immediately grabbed my attention was the use of closure. In all of the letters there is what appears to be black lines slashing through them horizontally, but in fact it is just the black negative space. Our minds fill in the gap and we see letters. This negative space may also signify sticks (which is a play on the band name). The logo also uses Gestalt’s principles of similarity in color as well as proximity. The closeness of shapes constructs this larger notion of the band. The futuristic, contemporary songs they are known for translate in their logo.
