One thing that I know that I learned from the documentary, “To Delight and Inform,” is that designers have a deep passion for their profession. They make their profession their life and continue to do it as long as they please. Milton Glaser has been doing design for a very long time and is still doing what he absolutely loves. His wife clearly supports everything that he is doing and it shows how much support he has from his family and also the people he works with because he’s still working.
When you learn in the documentary that Glaser was the one to design the “I ♥ NY” logo, design, or whatever you want to call it, I was amazed. Something so simple and powerful had to take some thinking. I was very surprised to learn that he didn’t make any money from that design, but he didn’t care. He is happy with what he is doing and that was the number one thing that I learned: Do what you love.
It is always something I’ve told myself and lived by, but it’s something hard to do in a world like today because money does make the world go ’round. Since I was little, I would play that whole “What do you wanna be when you grow up?” game. I would come up with the most difficult professions that I knew were the most difficult to pursue. I went from an actor, to a doctor. Nothing that I had the deepest passion for. So deciding a major was difficult because that was what you were planning on doing for the rest of your life. I have friends that are in these professions that aren’t high in demand in the world today, and I know they don’t care. They just want to be able to do something that they love for the rest of their lives. That is what I see Milton Glaser doing. He loves design. He lives it. He probably dreams about it, too.
