Design can save your life – this was one of the many lessons I took from the film Objectified. The film explores the world of industrial design, which is an area of design that I’ve never really thought about. In industrial design, there exists a constant battle between function and form. A product must efficiently function for consumers, but its form can also directly impact that.
One of my favorite quotes from the film was when the Braun designer talked about how “the legitimization of design in the future will be how it enables us to survive on this planet.” In that argument, it appears that function supersedes form. That being said, if you look at the iPhone – which is definitely a life-saving object – its creators clearly injected design concepts into its form: its color, shape, weight, etc. Objectified makes you realize that design is a necessity, not an accessory.
